e-Align T-REX 250-450-500-600 > What pinion for Axi 2208/20 in a lightened Trex?

I've been following Jarod's lightened Trex thread, and I'm about ready to start cutting for servos for CCPM and doing final motor/electronics install.

I'm going to try an Axi 2208/20, CC10 with TP 3s1320's. I'm thinking I'll use the included plastic blades (305mm?) for first test flights, and will probably get some 305mm woodies to use regularly after that.

My estimated AUW at this time is 15.5oz-16oz on the following:

Axi 2208/20
CC Phoenix 10
TP 3s 1320
Align Gyro
GWS 6ch rx
Cirrus 5.4g servos

CCPM mod
305mm main blades

What pinion would you recommend for the motor?

Thanks!

Where do you find a pinion that size? (Kit comes with 11/13/15 pinions for 3.2mm shafts as I recall)

Would motor work alright with smaller pinion to begin with?

What do you think amp draw would be like?

Thanks in advance for your quick reply.

Thanks for your help.

BTW, where do you fly around Alhambra? My wife's family lives there, and we used to live there. We visit every couple of months, if I knew a good flying field, I'd bring my heli and some foamies with me next trip.

johnny b,

You sure that set up will work? That AXI is what I use on 8 ounce indoor foamies. It will easily over amp a Phoenix 10 on a two cell lipo pack with a small prop. You're talking about 120 watts max power. I think my set ups are almost double that power at full load. That Phoenix is designed to operate 3 micro servos only, not 4 and a gyro. Some people had to go to a Pheonix 35 so that the bec would survive.

Anyway, I will be interested to see your results. I have used rc car pinions (48pitch). They are NOT a perfect pitch match but close enough to work.

Yes, its my experiment. I've been reading Jarod's thread on lightening the Trex. I did a little poking around in motors and such over at rcgroups, and some other checking, and came to the conclusion the Axi 2208/20 is very close to the specs of his homemade motor. If I can get it set-up and geared properly, my Trex will weigh less than 16oz with TP3s1320's, draw less than 10A, and perform well, both with flying time and general performance. I think this way, if it works, would really be the future of the Trex--that is, CCPM, lighter AUW, and lower weight/better flight times on less expensive electronics.

If it doesn't work, then I'll just move what's left to a HB 3D Pro when it comes out and build a more "traditional" set-up on the Trex.

FWIW, I've seen several posts of people using the 2208/20 in a Shogun with 17-18T pinions with good success. A lighter Trex should perform even better. I've also used CC10's with 4 pico servos in many foamy set-ups with no adverse problems.

We'll see how it all comes out.

I would like to see how well it works. I have a 2208/20 sitting around the needs a good home.

Just got a 17T and an 18T pinion at the LHS, got all my components, so hopefully should finish it up and make it flyable in next couple weeks (lots of professional/personal commitments to deal with first).

I'm real excited to see how it works out. I think it will do fine, hopefully even more than fine.

I dont think that would be the motor to use for the TREX.
