e-Miniature Aircraft Furion - Razor - Ion-X > Hot Dog! Saved 1.75oz

Just wanted to let you guys know, Last night I got a replacement hollow mainshaft from Bergen for my ION-X

It was the best $20.00 I spent so far since it is 49 grams lighter!!! Wish I could do that ten times.
As light as the Ion is construct I just couldnt stand to install that solid bar of steel

A friend has a set of JR 4130 servos and suggested them for the ION.
Anyone have thoughts on those? Until he made the generous offer I was thinking toward a set of medium priced Futaba digital servos...
Thanks in advance
Rick

4131 have served well in most helis in the past and use less battery juice than the digitails will ,,,,, it would be a win / win situation ,,,go with them is my vote

I used hollow main masts exclusively during the develpoment of the Ion, They work well. Now I'm using titanium, 2 oz lighter than the steel mast.

The general concensus is to use 9252's in this heli, but I have used 9202's, 9303's and 9204's as well with good results.

Where can you buy titanium main shafts from? Do they sell one that will work with the Fury Extreme? I wouldn't mind buying a few. Could you please post a link or some info so I could order some? Thank you.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Hi Tony,

Glad to hear you removed 4 oz. from the heli but that is only a little over 2% of the total weight. Do you have any more ideas? I would love to take out about 1 1/2 pounds. This would equal about a 14% weight drop. Then you could see an improvement in performance.

How serious are you? My original conversions used:

Graphite landing gear (much lighter but fragile).

Hollow masts (no down side that I could tell).

Original black gear assembly turned on a lathe for a weight savings of I'd guess 4 ounces over the split gear assembly (no driven tail).

A UBEC instead of an Rx battery for 3 to 6 ounces less weight (several possible issues with this).

A 401...lighter than 601 or 502.

Case removed from receiver (not too much here but it is just extra weight).

I'd guess if you did all this, you may shave off a pound depending on where you're at now.

Tony is right though. When you get the heli down in that 9 to 9.5 pound range, it's too light. It won't penetrate as well and wind knocks it around a bit more. If you just want to toss it around in front of you, lighter would be better. But if you want a well balanced heli that is good for a lot of different stuff, 10 lbs is kind of a magic number for that disk size.

WOW!
I could not imagine flying my Ion with it weighing less than it does now.
As it is I don't feel it penetrates the wind nearly as well as my Fury.
When I slap the camera mount on there it is much better feeling into the wind even with the extra drag of the mount.

The Great ION-X Kit

Thanks everyone for the advice and suggestions, I have made good progress and am finally installing the electrics. Made the decision to go with the JR 4130s and a Futaba PPM receiever just because they were available very inexpensively.
I just love this kit! It goes together very well, is super precise and is very rewarding to build. Although in hindsight I wish I would have made sure it was an open style tailrotor.... Got it as an in-stock kit from
Ricks and thought it would have been.

I am puzzled about which servo goes into what receiver channel???
The directions indicate:

Servo 1 is the receiver elevator connection
Servo 2 is receiver Pitch connection
Servo 3 is the receiver aileron connection
Servo 4 is the receiver rudder connection.

I assume servo 1 goes to the channel 2 connection and servo 4 goes to channel 3... is this right?
So what channels do servos 2 and 3 connect to?
FYI I have a Futaba 9CH
Thanks a bunch

try this.......

elevator ch 1
aileron ch 2
pitch ch 6
rudder servo to gyro SX out
gyro to ch 4
gyro gain to ch 5
throttle (speed controller) ch 3

go to the swash type and set it first.

I would also like to highly recommend that you use a PCM receiver. In any large heli, this is advisable. There is a greater propensity for electrical noise with these larger helis and PCM does a much better job of smoothing over minor burps whereas PPM will dance around on you.

Just flew my ION-X for the first time yesterday
And I just love that machine...it is so stable, just balances on the downwash at about 5 feet high
Boy does it ever sound and fly nicely, my skills are at a beginners level but a friend flew it around the cul de sac for me and it is just a blast to play with and fly.
I am running it on 2, 16-cell packs nimh packs 3300 GPs and they seem to fly it fine although I know going to the Lipolys will be an order of magnitude improvement. But sure cant beat the round cells for price and ease of use if you allready have the charger.
It is equipped with
401 Gyro and matching servo
3 4130 JR servos
a PCM Futaba receiver
all powered by a 1650 mah receiver pack.
Blades are Thunder Power 680s

The motor and ESC are barely and to conserve the receiver pack I am planning to remove the electric cooling fan.
What a nice time to be in this hobby!

Glad to hear it Rick

I had thought I was the only person who ever used roundcells any more. There really is good value for the money with those.

What does the weight end up at with 32 cells on board?

I weighed each pack of 16 cells and they were right at 36 ounces each. Not light but that hacker sure hoists them into the air easily it seems!
I have to go to FedEx tonight...that would be a good place to bring the heli ready to fly for an accurate weight. My last post was in error...I am using JR4131s not 4130.....my aircraft steel tubing days makes it too easy to write 4130
Thanks for the help and advice everyone, and after seeing how still and smooth it hovers, am sure glad Chris reccomended the PCM receiver!

Rick

I have always had the Leccy bug, at least in planes that is. We shall see what the Predator does this weekend. Unless Karl was just flying it really conservative, then it is lacking in the power department a bit. We shall see. I have the TP's charged, and if I did not have to meet with one of my Vice Presidents this afternoon, I would be testing it this afternoon.

4.3 lbs What about a HV setup on 1950 FAUP's?

An Ion is in the works, just have to wait until the end of next month.

Sorry to threadjack!
