e-Electric Conversions > Battery Backup for TX?

Having had a TX pack quit on me whilst I was flying, I was wondering if anybody had a circuit that would switch automatically from one pack to another should either fail. So calling all electronics gurus for any ideas! My thoughts on it were, the main TX battery would power the TX by switching a transistor, which would allow current to flow from that pack. In the event of the main pack failing the current going to the transistor would be lost thereby switching it over to the other pack, like an electronic relay. Does that sound right? Don’t laugh folks it’s been 25 years since I did electronics at school, so my small amount of knowledge could be dangerous! I have infact made it work with a relay, but it uses power and seems like a clumsy solution. Any Ideas would be very welcome! Many thanks!

Here's a brain fart to consider.......why not rig two identical TX packs in parallel? Greater capacity and if one fails you will still have the required 9.6vdc from the other to operate the TX. Now it's late night here and we had a couple pints with dinner, so be kind.

That's what I was thinking, but where would you put a 2nd battery?
Also, how would you know if one battery had indeed failed?

did it fail or did you drain it? I've never had a t.x. battery fail.. but to increase time I installed a duralite lithium t.x. pack.

Rhett... There's no power like E Power!

Well Guys you are not going to believe this, and this is why I am concerned. My TX pack failed seconds after I had landed, The pack had a cell in it that for same reason developed a high internal resistance that shorted the rest of the pack causing total failure without warning (this is what the shop told me, they replaced the pack free of charge). The pack had been charged correctly on my shultz charger and had displayed no unusual symptoms. Now I thought as you did Boyd, why not rig two identical TX packs in parallel. However if the pack were to short out inside, would it not also short out the other pack? The answer to that I think has to be yes. Now I have been flying model aeroplanes for years and never had a problem, but I think that any back up is better than none.
With regard to housing the reserve pack I have found a really neat little box which I could attach with heavy duty Velcro, this sounds a bit messy but it's not, it looks very tidy and you don't damage the TX at all save putting a little nick in the battery cover for the reserve wire to go through. Mmm food for thought chaps! So what do you recon, how can We electronically isolate this pack should it fail? I wish I knew more about electronics!

All The Best!
