Radio - Servo - Gyro - Gov - Batt > Digital servos / heavy duty switch??

I've read where you need a heavy duty switch when using digital servo's because digital servos use larger gauge wire, is this needed or not?

I'm using Futaba 9252,9253, and 9204. Thanks, daz...

although the heavy duty switch is not required, its probably better to use it. I have used the stock switch and the heavy duty switch with digitals, they both work fine. I am currently using the heavy duty switch.

I advise that you upgrade to a Heavy Duty switch that uses 22 AWG wire instead of the standard 26 AWG. The v-drop on the heavy duty harness is much less, something that will matter when several digitals (or high torque standard) servos are going at it.

Oh YEA!

YES, get a better switch! I had 2 switches fry. One cost me a bad crash the other cost me a mild crash.

I have changed to the JR gold switch and it seems to be doing well.

There is another switch that I am concidering. It's an electronic switch. When it fails, it fails to ON. This good thing. It's $50 at central hobbies.

IF it weren't for mechanical faiure out of the 15 crashes I have had only 2 would have been my fault.

Instead of the $50 switch, how about just hooking 2 packs/switches in parallel as in rcbatteryclinic.com? Cost would be about the same and you get pack and switch redundancy and extended flying time.

A good switch to use is the Futaba #FUTM4385. It is specifically made for digital servo use. Ken, I've had those JR gold switches fail. Take one apart, they are very cheap inside. I also considered the electronic switch , but someone told me that there is a current draw when the switch is off. If you are not hooked to a trickle charger, you'll have a dead bat. I have not tested this myself, don't want to buy one to find out.

Yes there is a current draw, just look at their web page. You have to disconnect your batt when you're done flying.

Actually, the best switch is no switch at all. I use the Strongbox for my bat and Rx, so I thought I'd run a short servo extension outside the Strongbox so I could get to the plug. If you run one of those yellow plastic doo-hickeys to keep the plug together, then the only other concern would be wearing out the plug to the point where making contact could be an issue.

Hey Al,
That sounds like a pretty good idea. Just eliminate the switch all together. I think I'll do that. Can anyone tell me if there is any good reason not to do this? How many plugs unplugs should the connectors be good for before they start to wear out?

I went to the LHS today, and purchased the Futaba heavy duty switch, it was $17.00. Well worth the piece of mind that my digital servo's wont blow my switch. Daz...

The Jaccio voltage regulator with the fail-safe switch will draw about 170 microamps (not milliamps) while in the off position. It would take a very long time to drain your battery. This is required to hold the enable pin of the regulator in the off position. It was a sacrafice that had to be made in order for the regulator to be on with the switch in the off (open) position.
