e-Miniature Aircraft Furion - Razor - Ion-X > New ION-X kit owner w/ a couple questions

Greetings Everyone. Thanks to the valuable info on this board I made the big decision and just received my ION-X (hacker) kit last night. I only have about 10 flights under my belt on a friends' X-Cell 60 and that was enough to get me hooked.
Last night I opened the kit, read the manuel and started assembly. Its' the finest kit I have ever had the pleasure of owning and have already made quite a bit of progress.
I do have a couple questions if you guys dont mind....
In the manuel it describes setting up the normal idle-up to ramp smoothly up to full throttle during the first 25% of the stick movement then a flat line above 80%.
It then describes that you should never do forward flight in the normal mode but shift to idle-up-1 which should look like a V or a U in the throttle curve. Why is that? I was hoping to only set up the normal mode to keep things simple.
To keep the head speeds down I also ordered a 58 tooth intermediate gear and plan to use 5s-4p packs with 680 blades.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this setup? What head speeds will I see?
Would it be feasable to use 4s-3p packs to both reduce the weight and keep the headspeeds down that way rather than with gearing?
Thanks greatly for any replies. I guess its obvious I am a rank beginner and am hungry for knowledge about this fine helicopter.
Regards,
Rick Smith

Because of the ramp up and down of the speed controller, once it's running at a reasonably high head speed (above 80%), you don't want it to run down as unlike a glow engine, it'll take many seconds to ramp up again. THis is why on an Ion, you can't recover from an Auto, once committed that is it right down to the ground.

Also, the speed controller is much more inefficient at below 100%, so heat can be a problem if you hover around at say 70% all the time.

I fly my Ion with a flat line at 100%, no V or U at all, and it's been working really well.
