Blades, Night Flying and Painting > Glowire reliability and battery life?

Hi,

After watching Shawn Lammers fly his LOGO 20 at night 5 weeks ago, I got inspired to try it on mine. Some suggestions on this forum pointed to Glowire and I received a nicely done "heli kit" in a very short time.

I followed the suggestions to start at dusk and get used to it gradually. Funny thing - the western sky was still a little brighter and a hazard to avoid because the lights were washed out and the heli was just a sillouette. I did loops and rolls on every flight and on last one after midnight I held an inverted nose-in hover for a short while. This was done next to a highway interchange so there was a bit of light from some nearby light standards.

Anyway, although it worked flawlessly, I'm wondering if there have been many failures with these units, so I can assess the real need for some redundancy. I was planning to strap some glow sticks on the skids, but I don't feel that I need it for help with orientation. I'm using a couple of Aero-Strobes on the canopy as well.

Also, how long does a 9V battery last in one of the 60 heli kit versions?

Almost forgot to say - what a blast!

Cheers!

Cheers!

Hi,

I have'nt timed it to the minute but I seem to get an hour and a half out of the battery on a 60. It goes quick when the battery dies though, use some cyalumes on the heli just in case. Cyalumes are $1 apiece, cheap insurance.....

No problems with the reliability in 3 years, I do all my own solder joints on the cable. I also use servo plugs on the end of the wire and a one piece easilily removable platform with the transformer's and battery so it can be used on different helis. Use one transformer for the tail and one for the canopy, the glowwire will be twice as brite. You can use one battery to power both transformers and put a switch in the circut so you can turn it on and off on the ground.

It can be an absolute blast but you have to be carefull flying into dusk, auto's at nite add an extra thrill since you really cant see the ground
