e-Hirobo SRB Quark - Lepton - XRB Coaxial > Laminating the XRB blades, makes them stronger. A pictorial guide

I have seen a bunch of asking about blade laminating for the foam blades. This is how I have done it with great success. Please keep in mind that I am not responsible for any damage done due to this mod and it's done on your own free will. Let me tell you though I have used the same blades for over a week with multiple mishaps and they still flew. The last set I replaced looked likr there was no way they could fly a heli but they did.

Step 1 : tools needed, scissors work good but be careful. A good cutting blade ,clear packing tape, strapping or extreme strapping tape and of course BLADES

Step 2 : Tear off a pc of tape long enough to cover blade and have a holding area longer than blade. I take the edge of the tape back to the trailing edge and hold the front edge of tape parallel to the leading edge. Press it down and rub the wrinkles out. Ideally if you do it right there won't be any wrinkles and it's better if their are'nt.

Step 3 : Now that the underside of the blade is covered ,roll the blade on your work surface so you keep a little pressure on tape against the leading edge. This way there is no bubbles on the leading edge. As soon as you have rolled over press the tape on and pull it between your fingers to smooth it down and make sure it's stuck good.

Step 4 : Time to trim them up. I use scissors because it kinda seals the cut edge a little better than a blade. I've also found that if you use strapping tape you need a really sharp blade and they do dull down quick. Now trim off the area on the hub and try to keep the tape off the raised areas so it moves easy

Cotinuation of steps: Trimming the area around the hub

There you have a finished blade. But I do one more thing that helps keep the blade from getting damaged so easily. I cut angle from the plastic hub out to the beginning of the trailing edge lift surface. This helps the blade to swing back a little farther and keeps from damaging the root as badly.

I hope you all that try this are successful and enjoy the many flights these little helis offer. My son and I have had a blast

Merry Christmas to all,Rick

Is every one enjoying their XRB ??Laminating the blades makes them a little more enjoyable don't you think ?

At the risk of sounding dumb, why laminate?

There are no dumb questions. The stock blades are nice but rather fragile. If you have ever flown into an object you've noticed the foam blades shredded. The laminating process strengthens the blades and keeps them from shredding. But they are still soft enough to absorb hard hits and keep the shock from hurting the rotor components unlike the carbon fiber blades that don't have any shock absorbing propertys

Sounds logical. So far, have not hit anything, which is suprising considering the way I fly. I am really suprised how nimble this thing is. My kids love for me to chase them around, and I have been getting away with some really neat turns. I was concerned at first after reading others having trouble with FF, but mine really has no bad habits.

Someone makes CF baldes for this heli?

Yes on ebay there is someone selling carbon blades for the XRB. I believe that they usually sell for around $50.

For that much, they can keep them.
This bird flies great stock. Just need an extra battery or 2.

This same procedure works great with 3M brown packing tape. I even prefer it. Some of you have asked for a manufacturer number on the tape. I don't see one but here are the details I have:
================================
Its the basic brown packing tape you see in grocery stores and pharmacies. Here are some words that are printed on mine:

Scotch Packaging
Super Strength
2IN x 800IN (22.2 YD)
50,8 mm x 20,3 m
3M

Comes in a red plastic dispenser with cutter built in, not a box. I paid $2.95.

Make your blades stronger

I tried the packing tape and if you don't balance them, the robo can be a bit eratic. Quick and dirty way of strenthening the blades.
WHITE GLUE!

Run a thin bead on both sides of the blade and smoooth it down with your fingers. Better if you do this off the heli. Takes a lot of flex out.

I imagine a light spray of foam safe paint would do also.

PS
Let them dry first before flying.

Batteries

I've used up to a 1320 tanic stapped to the bottom, a bit heavy. A 1020 tanic seems about the best. 830 are ok too.

Yea, I always balance them while taping.
Doe the white glue work as well as the tape?

Also, I have done a second layer off 3M brown tape after crashing a few times with the first layer. Flatten them out as best as you can and repeat just like the first layer. I have had great results.

white glue

Not quite as stiff. Enough to take some of the flex out. Overall it's less work and the results are not bad. Takes 5min to do
