Ok. Found my bearings:

does anyone sense that the t-rex or other micro helis in general have a gyroscope type feel to them

I think you may be using the wrong pinion. The 400L is 2500kV? What timing are you at?

Normally you would use a 13T on a 2800kV, so I guess you may have been loading your motor, and while applying cyclic there is not much juice left to control the head.

I would try an 11T and go from there.

My T-Rex responds to cyclic input in a flash!

Only MO.

Hi jackheli,

If there is a current draw problem, I think the servos would not even hold its position let along move in the desired direction. In addition, if the HV-UBEC and cc35 are working properly, shouldn't the cc35 shut down first before voltage drops below the 9volt (3s) or 12volt(4s) threshhold?

Although I would agree that using 11T or 13T will lower the headspeed immediately and reducing the gyroscopic effects. However, according to KC's SS and Align website, 13T or 15T appears to be ideal with 400L.

Kwan,

The 400l seems less powerful than the 400s, yes?

I would definitely try to lower the teeth count. What timing are you using? What headspeed? Hovering pitch?

My Align 25A ESC does not completely cut power under 9V (I wonder why). Instead it gives brief bursts of power. Very strange... Have you tried going into BEC?

Your T-Rex seems like a completely different machine on cyclic. Try holding the Heli in your hand while applying cyclic inputs. Check how fast the head reacts on 0 degrees and at max pitch to see if something is slowing the input down.

I do not have a 400s for reference comparison. However, with 4s tp2100 and 15T, the 400L is more than capable of spinning the blades up to the moon.

I am quite concerned about the abilities of those little balsa blades to handle the tip speeds. The tip speeds on these little blades must be close to supersonic speeds. You lose control and efficiency as you approach supersonic velocities on the blades.

Kwan,

As I said, maybe because of a weaker motor (?), my T-Rex does not show the kind of gyroscopic effect on cyclic you mentioned. With 35% expo it is quite tame, but will roll on a flash.

Yes, I believe the t-rex has sufficient cyclic control designed into its system. Simply feels a little strange flying the t-rex since it did not respond progressively to cyclic commands with the ballistic head speeds I have.

Overall, the t-rex is still heads and shoulders above some of the other micro e-helis.

What is a good starting point for the tail rotor pitch angle for the T-Rex? I cannot find this data anywhere in the manual.

I centered my servo and set the blades to neutral. Don't know if that is the correct way but seems to be working just fine for me.

Opfor,

Thanks for the tip! How about the tail, what angle are you using, or what is the distance from tip to tip between the tail blades when folded towards each other?
