e-Miniature Aircraft Furion - Razor - Ion-X > Thunder Power Gen2 HD Problems?

Anyone had any problems with the new 5S4P Thunder Power Gen2 HD (Grey Stripe) packs? I had one cell in a pack swell last weekend during flight. Charged normally, both packs were within .01 volts, 20.94, 20.95 after charging. Checked the voltage after removing the batteries and the voltage read 19.08 on both. This flight was only 7 minutes, I normally fly for 8.5. I'm wondering if maybe I just got a bad cell, the other packs I have are older and more cycles with no problems.

Thanks
Dave

Thanks for the info, the batteries are the main reason I waited so long to buy the Ion. I may want to give the tanics a try, whats the cost difference between the tanic and TP?

Thanks

Dave,

I have four sets of the grey lableled packs and no problem so far. I think these have been alot more reliable so far, but there is always exceptions. I'm sure the guys at TP will take care of you.

I received a new gray stripe pack and when I opened the box it was already swollen, it’s been 2 weeks and they still have not shipped replacements. Spoke with TP today and they said it may ship next week. I’m considering using Tanic packs everyone of my TP packs have failed.

I had one pack end up with a puffed up cell (only one cell, far as I could tell)...original red/yellow label pack. Funny though, it worked fine and was actually stronger than my other set. Replaced promptly by Thunder Power. I've had good luck so far with the newest mil-spec packs...good power, lighter, and no problems. Packs stay well matched.

Replacement lead times seem to vary quite a bit. It depends where TP is as far as stock is concerned that seems to make the difference. From what I have been told, the cells must be "aged" for a period of time before they can be assembled into packs and put into use. If you catch them at a bad time, you might have to wait a few weeks. That sucks but they really do try to keep everyone happy. Doesn't hurt to call and check in periodically.

Skippy,
If all your failed packs were the original ones, then I think you'll have better luck with the new mil-spec packs. If you're seeing failures in the mil-specs, then you might want to double check the operation of your charger with an accurate DVM. Sounds really quite unusual to have that many failures. I think the swollon on arrival pack is probably just a fluke. No, I'm not a TP rep...I wish I was!

I was also concerned with all of the failures. I have 2 Schultz Isl 6-636+ chargers with the latest firmware. Checked them at work on a $50,000.00 scope and both are well within spec. All of the packs that failed were the yellow label except for one, this was the new Gen-II. The pack arrived with a swollen cell, never been charged. I hope all of this was just bad luck or just a bad run of cells, time will tell. I also record several parameters for every flight in a excel spread sheet.

I think you've had bad luck. I've had tons of t.p cells, and I'm not a rep, although I'd love to be. I had 2 packs go bad, one was a small 3s 2100mah pack, that after about 10 flights had some liquid under the label, that t.p. said dispose of it, and they sent me a new one that I got within 3 days, and the other I let it self overdischarge over winter and a cell swelled, and they still gave me half off on a new pack. right now I have 4, 4s3p packs, and 1 2s3p pack. although I'm a fan of t.p., i think both tanic and t.p. have near the same technology, and you can be happy with either. I've only had one tanic pack, a little 2s 830mah pack and that worked well.

Just sent one of my gray label packs out today. One cell swelled up. I hope they repair or replace it for free. I have only 10 flights maximum on it.

we need to hook up one weekend and fly i will let you try some Tanics

All the lithium cells work well!!

I think the big advantage wiht the TANICS is the TANIC TAPS i can keep all my cells matched over a long period of time!!

Another thing is always charge one pack @ a time and spend the money on good chargers i use 2 schulze isl6 -636 chargers

I have four 5s4p TP packs with the grey stripe and never had a problem with them. I originally ordered the yellow striped packs and it arrived with a swollen cell. That was sent directly to Advanced Energy Tech in Las Vegas and they replaced it with the new grey striped ones at no extra charge. I've had nothing but good dealings with them. Email them and they should replace the pack(s).

I am happy someone is having good luck with Advanced Energy Tech! I had a yellow tag pack swell, so emailed them. They asked me to describe the label, so I sent them a picture. They replied by saying they have several people who read emails, and didn't know why I sent them the picture. I then replied sending them a copy of every email I had previously sent, and again included the picture. They again answered me by saying they have several people who answer email and couldn't figure out what I needed. I again sent them all of the previous emails and another picture and they again said they didn't know what I wanted, but to sent them the pack and they would see if they could figure something out. I sent it to them over a month ago and still haven't received anything from them. Not and email, phone call, nothing! I guess this will be the last time I use TPower packs....

Later;

Try giving Advanced Energy a call about your problem. I have allways been able to talk to someone directly with great success. The phone number is on their wbsite. I have had problems before with their batteries but they have allways taken care of it.

Another thing you can try and i have noticed it makes a differance is dont fast charge youre packs i only charge mine @ 1/2 the mah of the pack like i have been flying 7350 mah packs so i started charging them @ 3.5amps it takes longer but i have noticed the cells stay more in balance over more cycles!!

I believe that is how lipos are balanced, by slow charging them. The lower the charge rate the more the cells will be in balance.

well, not totally. slow everything helps keep things in balance, but really, it depends on how close the company built everything. nimhs/nicads are "rebalanced" by super slow charging them.
