e-Miniature Aircraft Furion - Razor - Ion-X > MY WORST NIGHTMARE COME TRUE!

ABoyNamedSueHeliman - Location: Gainesville, FL -
I've always been very careful about keeping my R/C stuff away from my miserable cats, but tonight I let my guard down, and my 9 month-old kitten did this to the Hacker speed controller on my Ion-X:

She chewed through all three wires, even though you can only see the damage on the yellow wire.

So, what are my repair options here? Can it be repaired reliably, i.e. back to original condition? Or should I just bite the bullet, absorb it as a total loss, and just get another speed controller?

Correction: 9 WEEK-old kitten....

....They're lethal even at that young of an age! What makes it worse is that I spent over $300 on vet bills for that little sh*t just last week!

If you have a good 1/4" of wire to work with you can solder it and use some heatshrink tubing.

If you don't have room, take it apart and desolder the broken wire at the PCB and simply replace the wires all the way to the board.

Basically, I don't want "makeshift" solutions. Either the wire can be replaced completely or it can't, in which case I'd get another controller.

I don't think I'd feel too comfortable having three wires all of which have been soldered in TWO places rather than the normal one.

If the wires can be removed at the circuit board, I'd prefer that.

I would imagine (don't know for sure) that Hacker would replace the three wires for a nominal fee, certainly less than replacing the controller. That's if you didn't want to do the job yourself.

Pathogens, I definitely appreciate the offer, but...

...I think I'll send this to Hacker. While I'm sure you'd do just as good a job, I'd be more likely to be able to keep the warranty if Hacker does it.

If you've got time to kill, then you might as well send it to Hacker. That would be a waste of money and time, though. Personally, I'd rather solder on a piece of wire to what's left of that yellow wire than send it in. As long as you have a good solder joint, it won't make a bit of difference.

You sound very attached to your toys. Just a friendly word of advice...when it comes to model helicopters, it's not IF they crash, but WHEN they crash. They ALL crash sooner or later. Enjoy it, fly it, and don't worry too much about the cosmetic things....takes a lot away from the enjoyment.

Cut the shrink off the ESC and solder NEW wires to it!!! Don't waste your time sending it to Hacker. Wire is EASY to replace, and shrink wrap is easy to replace too!!

That is one funny nightmare...hope they don't get worse My kitty chewed my antenna too, man they love those little wires.

That really is an easy fix but if your not comfortable fixing it then I say save yourself from futher nightmares and send it in for fixing. However, soldering and de-soldering will go a long way for you in this hobby. If you have not done so really start learning it and get confident in your skills.

Well, at least the kitty is healthy
