Scale Model RC Helicopters > Graupner/Heim stuff any good????

Graupner/Heim? Is there stuff worth buying? I see on V-east that they have an Agusta A109 Power with Uni-Expert mechanics, retracts, and main and tail blades for $599.00. Seems reasonable to me. So whats the catch? Is their stuff worth buying? I am sure Vario stuff is nicer. But their prices reflect that. So is this a good alternative? Or a skip it item? Also can a scale cockpit be done in one of these? I have never actually seen one, so I have no idea what the fit is like. I would like to be able to do opening doors and everything. But I don't see those types of accesories on their site.

Any help would be great.

Thanks guys!

Hmmmm.
I hate to say bad thing, but for your own sake, stay away from it.
I just finished building one uni-expert mech, I got it because I'd like to use it on my scale project, I thought I got a good deal, but after I finished building it, I felt like I got rape,
It was a good product then (25 yrs ago) but Graupner never invests any money on their tooling, so it's way behind the other companies in their design and qualities.

Well I tell ya there Sy, I've built my first Uni and found it more than up to date. I guess it's like Ford and Chevy......kinda personal preference.
Talking to Wolfgang Simon ,head of heli development (1st turbine/fuse kit package), they do in fact reinvest and upgrade they're tooling and other manufacturing proceedures. For instance, the NH90 and other fuse kits have CNC'd all the openings and "glass" for huge time savings AND near perfect fit.....saving hours of labor. Much more time for detailing your pride and joy.
Again, IMHO, the beauty of this hobby is it's diversity. I guess it'd be pretty boring otherwise.

I loved mine! It flew very nicely and I preferred it to any of the Vario kits I have built. The mechs were partly assembled, the fuse was such high quality you could have put a couple of stickers on it and not painted it. It looked great in the air and the retracts were easy to set up.

The downsides were the model was standoff scale and wouldn't be a super scaler very easily. AND it took a long time to build. The reason it took a long time was that the few jobs left to do all seemed to need the glue leaving to set for 24 hrs before getting on with the next job. I think the whole thing took about 3 weeks to finish.

For a general purpose flyaround scale heli, I dont think you can beat it, especially at the price. I ran out of room and had to sell it, and its present owner loves it.

VARIO???
i dont too much care for their kits
i know a couple of people who have built them, and they say you never get everything you need to finish the heli..
there are usually some more parts to buy, and they are pretty expensive from what ive seen.
i am building what is supposed one of the hardest heims there is.
the bell 230 w/retracts...
its not an easy task, but i dont think the word easy and scale go together.
all i can say is that the quality in this model is excellent.
the fuse was perfect, never found one pin hole.
all the wood is real plywood, and everything went together with just minor alterations. i plan to paint mine, but it is not necessary, you can just build it, decal it, and fly it. ITS ABOUT HAVING FUN!.
if you want to see some scale cockpits for the heim helis, then go to the speacial interest section on the v-east site.
my ultrastar 2000 was the smoothess heli i have ever hovered, and that is the doner for the mechs for my 230, im sure it will be a great flying machine.
i also have an agusta a-109 power that i plan to do in an electric configuration. ( i may not paint this one).
remember.... all graupner's mechs. are very versatile and can be used in a variety of different installations and assemblies according to your specific needs and desires. scale opennings are possible with any of their fuse kits if you have the skills to build them. Sandy at v-east is very helpfull with any questions or ideas you have bout your project, and has spent hours on the phone helping me along the way with my 230.
as for the comment about the tooling being outdated, i think the uni-2000 mechs. were just made in 2000 hence the name.
good luck with whatever project you decide to take on, but as i said before, scale detail is an art, and is not easy...
and this hobby is about having fun.

I am building my first scale kit - the glo NH-90 w/ OS 91 power. I will say it has been a joy to build thus far. The only trouble I have run into, was a few minor pieces ( nut, c-clamp) missing - and Sandy took care of that without question, and on his dime for shipping.
I have been impressed with the fit and finish of the entire kit thus far, and the service verses a Vario - well...

Anyway, I would recomend them to anyone, and that come from a beginner builder - not the scale masters like Peter and others.
