Well I am close!

I have the carbon framesets done and cut...

This machine will be a direct 120 degree CCPM setup.

I have been getting really expensive quotes on having the bearing blocks and standoffs done, I am considering Delrin (found a good local source for copolymer plastics) as an alternative to aluminum to try and get the costs down.

Currently I am projecting the complete kit should be available for 374.99 without the box and 499.99 with "the box", drive shaft, and pinion.

I am working really hard to get these down, my original goal was 299.99/449.99 but the machinists are driving the costs up for what seem like the simplest darn parts.

If the delrin holds up to the stress testing we will do, not only will the kits be cheaper, they will be lighter and we can produce them faster.

The frame in the picture (without complete set of bearing blocks) came in under 10 ounces, I am estimating the complete frame set to run under 16 ounces.

Will post more pics when we have one running!

I know, my pain is not uncommon amongst us. If there are any alu machinists out there that are willing to work with me, please PM me!

More than one third of the cost of this kit so far is aluminum parts, Carbon work I am having done as cheap as can possibly be, and the quality is awesome, having a friend in the biz helps but size of the material needed still puts almost half the cost of the kit into carbon.

Folks who are interested please PM me, if I get enough people that will order one I can get better pricing, but right now I only have about 5 people interested. I am getting reseller pricing on "the Box" and am shaving that cost savings into the kit, I want to have a ready to build replacement for the nitro setup that will significantly lighten it up.

i think thats a great piece of work. the design of the frames looks like it has been thought out well.

a E-Evo with carbon frames would be a hit.

good luck

It gets bettery guys, I weighed all the parts together, (partially assembled) and it looks like the all up weight with batts should be just a hair over 8 lbs! If I used a UBEC I could knock another 4 ounces off the weight. I will post assembly pics tomorrow.

I am making final adusjments to the design as I go, mostly minor stuff though it is shaping up nicely.

Wait until you guys see what it looks like assembled. It looks awesome! like a huge hornet or bumble bee! Awesome look i tell ya.

I really didnt think the frame design was that nice looking during the prototyping just very functional, but now I have seen it together it just looks fantastic. And man is it ever light!

Paul really out did himself designing this set. He had the vision to see it through.

Big thanks to Greg, (fig8) for doing some damn fine quality machining on this stuff.

I studied the parts he made for me next to some MA parts I had laying around and I actually think he does better work, no misalinged cuts, all the shapes are correct, really sweet stuff.

Greg I think we may be onto something with the Delrin parts, they just really seem to have a ton of strength...

Don't worry guys alu parts are coming too, bling is not all lost....

ETA on kit availability should be about 2-3 weeks.

Pics of the built and flying proto.

I really like the CCPM setup better, much smoother on control and seems to lock into manuevers better. The 120 setup really seems to feel better.

The lighter weight is noticeable, the machine really powers through maneuvers now and just does exactly what you tell it.

As a side note, I measured a few things out, with the same gearing, (box and evo gears) you should be able to use the 10s4p setup and the freya head/main shaft/swash and with a different set of boom clamps, the Freya tail and use the same crutch to build a really light 90 sized electric. I will likely prototype that next (need to get some more parts).

looks too good to be true. your work is outstanding.

you can really do all that hard work some justice by uploading a vid of your machine flying.

nice 1.

ps - what bearing blocks are you using in that machine? the aluminium ones or the delrin ones.

The proto is flying the delrin blocks, I am still working on video, I need to get my buddy with a vid cam to record so I can post, I will do it soon.

Couple of things to note, I found out delrin is a brand kind of like Kleenex, the stuff I am using is not technically delrin (which is a homopolymer) this stuff is a copolymer, is "pre-stressed" and a bit tougher as far as sheer, tensile, etc. It machines really well, the bearing blocks we cut had some really nice tolerances for the fit of bearings. The parts came out better than expected. I am still making adjustments to the design, I will likely have kits available in about 3 weeks ready to ship. I am going to offer both (not) Delrin, (inexpensive) and Aluminum (more expensive) alternatives. I will also sell with or without "the box" but orders with "the box" will require an extra week or so since I am only reselling not making those.

Just to be crazy, I M3 tapped the delrin parts for the side mount holes, I was surprised by how well the taps hold up, I have broken several screws in the material from over tightening and am pretty sure that I could crack the CF frames before stripping the holes. I want to fly it for a bit longer before I give a final verdict on the delrin alternative...

Even better, I am finishing bolt hole adjustments in the design, frame set will work with the Freya head/mainshaft/gearing/ and tail setup with a second set of boom clamps for the octagonal boom. My biz partner just loaned me a trick XSpec to test fit and fly so I will have a report soon. Should be lighter than an Ion with the same power setup.

More to come.

BTW, crash tested the frame set, (not on purpose of course), crash was bad enough to destroy carbon blades, bend mainshaft, spindle, alu head hub, and boom almost 90 degrees. Not a crack on the carbon frame set, body mount sticks in front (about 1 dollar part) both broke but every thing else held like a rock. Way better than I expected...

Curios on the progress of this project. Did you get the x-spec conversion tested yet? Let us know how things are coming! Any chance of some video? Thanks

I am waiting on my machine guy to cut the template frames. I made several fairly major changes to the frames to use delrin 2 stage gearing instead of the box (lighter). I also added bolt holes and fittings to allow for the pipe drive set. I struggled for a long time with gear selection and spacing. I also was able to get the motor mounted high similar to the new Joker, it will come out of the top of the canopy slightly in the same manner. I will post pics as soon as I get the final proto parts. I will have video once it is flying. I should have production ready in a week or so.
