A heli main rotor is powered by a motor, whereas an autogyro's main rotor is not powered, but is spun by the air going 'through' the disc. Think of it as the autogyro is always in a small descent, even when flying level. A self-propelled autogyro uses a motor to push or pull it through the air, and the air going by spins the main rotor up, creating lift. Helicopters use the same principle of autorotation of the main rotor to keep it turning in the case of an engine failure. Autogyros don't need a tail rotor, because no motor torque is fed to the main rotor while in flight.

To complicate matters further, there are a few full-size autogyros that use a device called a pre-rotator, which uses the motor to initially get the main rotor turning. This is called a 'jump' take-off.

I might not be very good, but I'm fun to watch.
