Speed - Performance - Drag Race > What can I do to build a good drag machine?

Hi there,

What are the first basic steps I should take to build a good drag racing machine?

I imagine I'll need flat-bottom blades, as a powerful of motor as I can cram into the machine, and new throttle/pitch curves, but what else can I do?

Thanks,
Martino

Is rotorhead disintegration the weak link?

Ok, after reading many of the posts on this subject I realized many of my questions have already been answered.... should've searched first.

Anyway, I was thinking that some obvious things a person could do would be to attach the biggest flat-bottom blades possible, pitch them for maximum lift, and then spin the head as fast as possible. These things are obvious.

But there are limits of course, and I was wondering where the system would break down first? Would the head disintegrate before the blades would shatter or come off? Would the drive drain break up first?

Of course I haven't addressed power plant limitations but I'll leave that alone for now.

I know these are generalized questions but I was wondering if people could share their experiences or their ideas.

Thanks alot,
martino

Takeoff Technique

I have watched several drag races. The takeoff technique is a very important factor in winning races. I have seen some fast machines get beat by a pilot with a good takeoff technique. Excessive climbing is like burning rubber at the drag strip.

Just something to keep in the back of your mind once you get the ultimate machine.

Good Luck,

Drag Racing....

Have you thought about modifying the engine and running a pipe? I race boats and the engine mods and pipes we run push our boats past the 100 mph point. Go to the hobby shop and look for the advanced boat racing booklet and follow the steps very closely on modifying your engine and you can't go wrong.

Will ya look at that, it worked.

The only thing with boats is there is just about unlimited amounts of cooling available to the engine.

A skilled pilot without flight discipline is a walking time bomb.

for 1 you can mount a larger carb on your motor, (as we found-out with the OS 50~ hyper) you'll get more power, and a tuned pipe like the Weston really makes your motor come up on the power.

Engine Mods..

Get the booklet entitled:

Advanced
R/C BOAT
MODELING
by John Finch.

It's from the publishers of:
Radio Control
BOAT MODELER
This booklet will explain what's involved in modifying your engines to get more reliability and or more power and speed out of them.

DrlSgt, 15 years ago I ran boats (3D brand) and there was a company I believe it was named "RPM" they used-to make connecting rods and the carb that all race boaters just had to have, I was wondering if you would know if they still make carbs ??

Drag Racing....

I don't know about the carbs, but the con rods are great.

Con Rods....

I've never broken a stock con rod as long as I kept an eye on the bushing and changed it when it became out of round. Of course, once I did break one, I replaced it with an RPM one. But you still have to check the bushings as when racing they wear rapidly.

You can call Brett at Allied Hobby in Philadelphia.
He still modifies engines the "Bruce Bennett way" and can produce one hot racing motor.
Anybody who's been around in the heli worldshould know who Bruce is.
He could make a .60 run like an .80
He took the vertical climb record at IRCHA years ago.
He and Brett have done a great job at making some of the fastest helis around.

Yup

I AGREE.

Brett is the man for engine work.

In 2001 when I won all three classes, Brett prepared my engines.

That man can build some engines!!

Keep in mind, the engine is not everything.

Getting a good holeshot and keeping the heli low is pretty important also.

PM me and I can send you a good video of a really good holeshot and race.

The SKS video from the 2001 IRCHA is worth getting.

They let the camera man stand in a really good position!

martino,
if you havent yet, I highly recomend you watch Furious Raptor video on how to launch the heli (it is actual race footage). Watch It closely, it is as textbook perfect as it gets.
