I've never competed and would not win any awards if I did but, you have to disable the GV-1 before you could successfuly be judged don't you?

That just doesn't sound right. That tells me not to compete until I have one but, I guess all the pros need them then eh

Curtis doesn't use a governor, but Curtis knows Curves...

personally, I do much better with a governor than without, but that's just me.

they're irrelevant for competition

Don't worry about it, Steve. Governors don't make anywhere near as big a difference as you seem to think. If you do a reasonably good job with the curves (and the sticks!), the heli will fly the same with or without the governor - you'll hear a bit less overspeeding and you'll hear a bit less lugging, but you won't see any difference.

They're nice to have, but they won't impact the scoring.

Thanks for that Nate, I would like to compete one day. I'll just concentrate on my best for now who knows maybe when I get into a larger ship I'll buy a Govenor.

I compete quite regularly in fAI style comps and I don't use a governor in my CS.
You can pretty much set your radio up to not need them by using mixes and stuff.
I use rudder to throttle mixing in hover condition so that as I do comp piroettes (ie slow - supposed to take 4 seconds a rotation) the heli doesn't rise or fall (depending on the direction of piroette). In this case I lower the throttle slightly when piroetting with the torque, and increase it slight as I go against it.
I use a little bit of aileron to throttle mixing for the multiple rolls and such, but flying around, I haven't thought to myself "This is where I really need a governor".
I think a governor would be most useful in the hovering sections in competition actually.
