e-Electric Conversions > Converting belt driven tail to seperate motor?

Can anyone tell me, would there be any advantage in converting a larger electric heli, eg Voyager E, from belt driven tail to having a seperate motor like the micro's?

Also, if it were to be an advantage, how could this be done? Would it be a case of connecting a giro to a seperate speed controller to control tail rotor speed, and having a fixed pitch on the tail rotor?

Can anyone help? This is something I am thinking of doing, just to see if it works.

It would only be a disadvantage. The pitch response of the variable pitch blade is a lot faster than the response of slowing a motor/fan.

I thought this would work well for a scale bird. But instead of changing the rpm of the tail rotor, just leave the pitch change mechanism in place. A small brushless motor running at its optimal rpm all the time would work great. In a big heli the weight wouldn't be a big factor.

Just my $.02

The real point of terrorism is not the act itself, but our reaction to the act.

depending upon the heli and it's boom size, you might be able to put a small brushless motor like a razor inside the tail boom and just couple it to a conventional gearbox (one with an input shaft and a 90 degree gear set). then all you'd have to do is get a p-10 controller and set it on governor and then change your pitch accordingly. works in theory but practical.....? just some input.

Are you planning on doing this just to see if it can be done?

I want to get AWAY from having a separate tail motor since they have a runtime life of 2 hours before they burn-out. I currently have a piccolo, and want to get rid of that rear motor....never should be used in my own opinion.

I did it on my Eco 8. Just for kicks and giggles. It worked but would only be good for scale like flying. I mounted a Wattage fan on the tail and shortened the tail up about 4 inches to help with CG. The only problem really is that the motor in the tail needs to be able to make faster adjustments than what I could get it to do if I wanted to do more than scale flying.
If you goto the Eco thread and go back about 6 or 8 months I think I put a pic in there somewhere along with a thread about it. Have sense disasembled it. I wanted to use it in a Scale Daufine.

Fly it like its a rental...
