Chip detectors are the magnetic sensors that are in the oil stream of the engines and transmissions that attract metal particles (former parts of the transmissions/engines). If there are enough of them, they will send a light to the cockpit. They look "fuzzy" when a lot of metal is on them.

The special ops side of the military is starting to use a lot more chinooks because of there payload capability and speed. We have some buzz our palace here in Iraq all the time since we have a special operations unit right next door. I will try to get a picture sometime.

imagine all the torque checks and retorques after all that.
I was just wondering on the ilca packings, they all had to had blown after all those stresses.

Great Video

As an engineer who actual analyzes chinook blades, the first thing I thought was...

"That's not in the fatigue spectrum mission profile!"

Actually, it's hard to tell just how aggressively the pilot was flying. When I've analyzed the blades it all X.x G Roll Reversal, X.x G Symmetric Pullout, ... I've never worked flight test so I'm not familiar with what the high G maneuvers look like.

As mentioned before, one thing the Chinook has to be careful of is off-load the blades. A negative G maneuver could see the fuselage moving up with the rotor blades moving down and they can (and have) cut the sync-shaft that runs along the spine. When this happens, the pilots can punch out like in an airplane. It's not something you do just for fun.

Saw the Chinook display the week before this video was shot. I watched it with one of the crew who came down for the ride. He's a crewman and even he was impressed with the manoeuvres from the ground. The stall turns are actually wing overs, it's the size of the heli and the speed that makes it look like a stall turn, and the display is flown with positive G. The display is designed to give the illusion of aerobatics and flying at the edge of the envelope and it works really well. You have to see the display for real so that you get a visual reference with the ground - it is a whole lot more impressive then. And the crewman who waves out the back is working pretty hard too - think I would rather be sat up front!

Regarding "punching out" of the Chinook, the emergency exit doors will mechanically jettison at the cockpit, but that's about it. I guess you still have to dive between the blades.

I didnt think the angle of the rotors on a ch47 would allow it to hover just the front end for that long, just cool.
Wadington eh? i should go to these places again, i used to go to Woodford in Manchester but not been for over a decade.great clip, thanks for that.

A CH-47 doing an external load job, and the forward rotor system collided with the object it was carrying.

A dephased rotor system that happened by itself hasn't happened in quite a while.

Hi,

I'm Sqn Ldr Dave Morgan, the RAF Chinook display pilot you see in the video. I found this site using a Google search and was surprised to find my display sequence, flown at the RAF Waddington International Airshow this summer, linked here. I don't know who took the video but it looks pretty good!!!! A professional version which includes in cockpit shots of my display can be found at http://www.sendit.com/video/item/7000000092471 and more info about the display team at http://www.militaryairshows.co.uk/chinook2004.htm

mikeflyz - we didn't need to pull any chip detectors after our displays, I did 26 venues this summer without incident - just shows what a great aircraft the Chinook is !!!

I'm glad you enjoyed the display, we won the best display prize at the Waddington show. We should be on the UK circuit again next year. I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have about the aircraft and the display.

Regards

wurthless,

You can imagine my surprise to see me on your site. To view the video I use winamp which is downloadable from www.winamp.com for free.

As for the video go to the RAF Waddington Airshow site www.waddingtonairshow.co.uk follow the link to the show's video, I should have mentioned you will need to buy it!! It will include all of the aircraft that displayed at this year's show.

My home base website is http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafodiham , unfortunately it is still being updated but should tell you a little about the RAF Support Helicopter Force.

Hello Dave
What a pleasant surprise to see your post in the forum.

Dave P,

Thanks for posting the video, glad you enjoyed the show and the Chinook display in particular. I hope you found the other links useful. Yes, we will be on the circuit next year, operations permitting, but my co-pilot will take over as display pilot. My wife won't let me out to play anymore, we did 26 venues this summer and she's would like a summer next year. Looked at your gallery and like the Gazelle, did my training in one of those!

Wurthless (Mike),

Yes and no, would be the honest answer. I've taken the manouevres as far as I'm comfortable with, especially in the verical, the aircraft weighs 13 tonnes!! This is my 3rd season displaying the Chinook and I think I know where the limit is! I don't think I would ever get bored doing the display and trying new moves, but its the time away at shows that takes it out of you.
