Aerobatic FAI F3C Contest > Almost pooped my pants “ Tempest FAI head”

Had the set screws in the control arms that run to the mixer let go on my flybar on the Tempest FAI head even with the lock tight.

That was fun getting it to the ground lost all control in the lot where I work still had pitch control but very little fore and aft response. Landed the heli and started looking it over.
The dead give away was when I spun the paddles 360 degre.

Time to mill slots in the flybar for the set screws to dig into “not having this happen again”

I now know what its like to fly without a flybar. Almost turned my white boxers yellow.

Its nice to be the Big Dog.

tight

That means they weren't tight enough, you'd be suprised those arms can take alot more tightening than you think, you can just snug them they ahve to be tight!

"man" I had them so tight the last time I stripped the hex out of them when I tried disassembling the head for some preventive maintenance. I had to cut the arms off and replace them.
This time it was just as tight also with locktite. It won’t happen again that’s for sure.

binding

And your sure there is no binding, sounds like you need a new set of wrenches if you stripped out the hex...

No binding it just let go. first time I have ever had this happen.

Just one of them eye openers for sure.

As for the wrenches, it’s a good hardened set of hex wrenches that will snap before it strips the driver. I have had them round out the inside of a hex head without hurting the driver so it’s not a driver issue.

Are you sure they were even tight to begin with? I know you told me that your alls himmer has been getting worse in the last month or so. After all you forgot to flair at the end of an auto just this last saturday. I think it is time to refill your ginkobaloba perscription.

sometimes oil kills locktite, I degrease my parts before using it.

I kind of had the samething happen to me, but it was a engine mounting bolt that came loose and made a nice pop as it flew through my cooling fan
I definitely had locktite blue on it

Clean them..

Clean the holes and set screws VERY well with alchohol.. "Thread" them through a paper towel soaked with alchohol and use your fingernail to run in the groove of the threads.. Tighten with a good new "L" shaped hex wrench..

LOL

I had a similar thing happen to my X-cell, the bolt that holds the washout arm came off in flight. Very little cyclic control...makes for an interesting landing.
