Main Discussion > O.S. .46 not such a great engine?

Location:

Eric Hawkinson bashed the O.S. .46 in a review of the O.S. .50 SX-H in the latest Model Aviation magazine.

He stated the the old .46's are extremely difficult to make run smoothly. Is this true?

I'm building a GMP Cobra and had planned on using an O.S .46 FX-H in it. I don't want to go with the added expense of the .50 SX-H and won't need the high power of that engine anyway.

If the .46 is a bad choice, what are people having good luck with? I'm on a tight budget and thought that the .46 was a bargain at $115.00. The Enya .50 might be a better choice but the cost isn't much less than
the O.S. .50.

Thank in advance for your help.

The OS46 has a bad reputation amongst flyers, but we have a guy at the field flying his converted Raptor 30 with the OS46 and it seems to be happy with it. The OS50 is definetely a better engine, of course the price is there as well.

I've had 3 OS 46s and haven't had much problem with them. They were a bit hard to tune for mid range. A large volume (60 size) muffler and an Enya #3 plug make them much easier to live with. Since last year OS put a different carb on them and that helped the lean mid range problem a lot. I wouldn't hesitate to use one as they are a good engine in general.

They work for me!

I've had two of them and am still flying one. I even bought both of them used and have never really had a problem. I say "really" because one of 'em came with the so called mod of drilling a small hole in the front of the carb. I could NOT get that thing to run so I filled it in with JB Weld and it runs great now. Its the one I still have and am using the largish KSJ comp. muffler. the other one had the larger Century Torpedo II 46/50 muffler and runs just as good but a bit louder.

I would not hesitate to buy a new one.

I flew a os 46 in my tsk for about two years. it was a royal pain in the butt until i went to uniflow fuel piping.

it had a lot of power - especially with a performance specialties replacement piston and sleeve.

That said, i would go with the OS 50 if i were to do it again. its not worth the time or aggravation.

My experience with the OS 46 was not that great. I had to run it very rich at idle and at the top end to try to get rid of a lean spot between 1/4 and 1/2 throttle. Consequently, I never was able to get good top end power out of it. This is why some have resorted to drilling the carb.

Many people have had good luck with this engine, so I have to think I was applying it wrong. It was in a Nexus 46 with 530mm blades. The 30 size blades just do not load this engine properly.

As long as you are going to go with longer blades, I think you can discount my experience.

The 46 had a problem in the spray bar. The newer engines don't have that prblem. You can buy the modified one from OS or get Ray's Authoritative guide to helicopters and modify it as per the book.
