What's involved in getting a radio system on your own freq? I have a radio operators permit that I had to have when I was first a pilot. Is that what I need to have my own freq? or is there another license that I need? I think they used to call it a 3rd class radio license.

Ham License

To operate an R/C system on 6 meters (50 and 53 MHz) you need a Technician Class or higher amateur radio license. The radio telephone license of a pilot is NOT acceptable for this in the US. Radio Shack sells a prep book and tape series for this that works OK to learn quickly. There is NO CODE requirement for this license.

if you were to get this license do you need a new speical radio or do you just change the crystals?

6 Meters

For Futaba's there is a special 50 MHzTx module that just plugs into the transmitter but the receiver is different from the 72 MHz so a crystal swap won't work. I bought the module and Rx together.

JR also has a plug in modual for the xmitter for changing bands. if you stay in the same band you can change the xtal but it should be tuned to avoid harmonics on other fequencies.

It will always be a shared frequency. if your flying with a group always check the freq being used. Assumptions lead to eventual crashes and upset people. If flying in a park, have a frequency monitor and use it while your setting up. this is no guarantee that someone in a close by park, street or house isnt playing or setting up their equipment in their driveway while you are flying.

P.S. For changing bands besides the new module you will need a new receiver for that band. Check the nearest clubs for freq used so you dont go through the expense of changing to be on a shared freq.
esp if you go to a fun fly! at least the odds are less.
