Like the sene in 13th Warrior, "go run and hide in a hole if you wish, you wont live a second longer, your fate is sealed".

I dont much believe in fate, but this kinda thing happens all the time (people dieing dispite thair best intentions, not from models).

You gota think about that kinda thing, I was standing next to a guy flying a turbine model once when he brought it by us at 250 mph and I thought boy that thing would kill you in a heart beat.

This can serve as a good reminder to all of us to keep on our toes and our eyes on the action.

any SOB that flys anything 250MPH close by me is going to get a severe @ss beating once he lands his craft... SAFTEY FIRST GENTLEMEN!!!... We have a saying in the C-130 flying squadron I belong to... Don't bend metal, don't bruise flesh... unfortunately in our hobby... the metal part is out... I was flying on base near a football field that had a track around it.. Well, people would come out and run laps... Needless to say.. Now that I am into forward flight, I decided it was time to relocate... this way.. If the Heli blows up or I dumb thumb it into the earth... oh well... we ALL walk away.... and this should go for you guys back at the states that fly in clubs.. any fool that jeopardizes the safety of a bystander or fellow modeler should be either buying beers that night or staying on the ground untill he (or she) learns a little lesson about our dangerous hobby.... But needless to say... I LOVE FLYING!!!
Rates up there with sex.... well.. kinda
and condolences to the family of the man that had to give his life to teach us all a valuable lesson...

hockey town is addressing a death , your sex and death association has got nothing to do with it ,it's not an appropriatly well thought out response. death and sex?.. are not the same thing . no ! don't mix your thoughts like that . keep it clean .. thats all ..

I'll agree. Not that I am bashing this post. But I think all the Innuendo's about sex are pretty lame. I am 24 years old so my hormones are running crazy, and I have no problem getting girls, but you will never hear me saying anything stupid. Anything I ask or talk about will be helicopter related.

Geez guys- Jagboy didn't say anything offensive. Why should he have to break up his thoughts into two different posts? You all are certainly entitled tol let him know of your displeasure with his writing style but I personally feel your off base on your observations. If the post were going to the deceased man's family directly I could see it being questionable, but we're all a bunch of people in a "virtual" flying field and we talk as such.
On a side not(my opinion only ;-) Jagboy you weren't really that much safer just hovering in the stadium as opposed to FF. If you had a switch, battery, crystal, etc, failure then your heli could have entered FF and hit someone just as easily as losing control in FF. It's best to fly models in areas designed for models as people are generally going to be aware of a potentially dangerous situation regarding models as opposed to not having any idea what it is your flying. Rationalization is a powerful tool that everyone uses and the possible end result is not always thought through.

vance, no need for the backup lip service thankyou.. don't need personal emails either, what I write is based on r/c and heli experience .. certain words don't mix well with this hobby .. live and learn .. I never flame unless it erks , not alone here ..

lets get back on focus with what the post started as which was what hockeytown was addressing.. it's a sad day when anyone gets hurt in the hobby , my condolences to the guy and his family ..

In queens NYC the same thing happened 20 years ago at shea stadium and r/c was partially outlawed in queens .. we now have a fewer communities left to fly .. sometimes accidents happen ..

What size plane was it? I was watching a episode on the discovery science channel about lightning. They were discussing how campers and golfers could die without really being close to a lightning strike. In fact, four of five may have been much closer to the strike and survived. Yet the ones who died were in as good or better shape and no sign of burns. The answer was found by looking at the deaths occuring during little league baseball games. When in rare cases the kids could be struck in the chest with a baseball and would die of a heart attack. It turns out that the heart is weakest right between beats. If it receives a shock at just the right moment, it could mean death in a situation were otherwise you would just walk away and not think about it. So it may not have needed to be a very big plane depending on various factors. I mean, it may not have been the brute force of the plane. But I don't know what really happened.

According to the radio here, the plane weighed 7 and half pounds. It hit him square in the chest. There was an incident some time back here in Phoenix where a man was killed during a pylon race. He was a pylon judge and was in a cage, however he was leaning against the cage when the plane hit and some portion of the aircraft hit him in the head.

My worst fear

I'll repeat my worst fear of this hobby, a thrown blade. Come on, each blade has the potency of a bullet. I sometimes get nervous standing near a hovering heli. Checking the tracking is even worse as it's on level with your eyes. Well, for me as I can't hear too well & my eyes are my life. If they get taken out, I'm pretty much done for.

Yes, I don't trust r/h's 100%.

Howdy!!!
I too, have long feared the "thrown blade" from one of my heli's. I pull on the blade grips before each and every flight, just to be sure.. I even know a fella that got hit pretty hard(big, ugly, purple, bruise) in the gut by a chunk of carbon blade that got cut off in a botched auto.. However, when you think about it, the odds are in your favor.. Hope I'm not jinksing myself, here!!!! If you are standing 15 feet from your hovering heli ( your should NEVER be closer than this, and this is close) and a blade lets go,the odds are in your favor.. Think of the percentage of the circle surrounding your heli that your body makes up.. Out of 360 degrees, you only make up a few, mabe 10 or 15 degrees of the circle, and the further you are from the heli, the smaller the percentage.. Knowing this makes me FEEL a LITTLE better, but the risk is always present..

First, may I sugest not mixing Red Bull and coffee befor you reply to my poast in the future.

For the record, I walked out to where he was flying and new what he was going to do which was bring it down the centerline so no need for a floging.

The point I was trying to make was how it opened my eyes about how much cenetic energy these things have.

Well i have had a sampler of a thrown blade!Was standing about 50 feet away from the heli (Kyosho Concept) stupid heli anyway a friend was flying about 4-5 ft hover when there was this BHUFFFF!!!!!sound and something came and hit me near my right ankle brushing my jeans leg.I realized as i saw the heli start to shake that the rotor had shot out and hit me like a bullet!!!Believe me had i been closer or the blade higher it would have caused serious injuries.I will advise all to be very careful becuz those blades with lead in them pack a lot of energy!!!If it hits you in the eyes you have had it.During a fun fly in Lahore recently a 10-12 year old kid was hit in the head by a thrown blade and the blade actually penetrated the childs skull,causing him paralysis!!i believe the kid is slightly better now.Hope he recovers completely.So take care everyone!!
