Got my Voyager 50 to the field yesterday for first hover. I've been practicing on FMS simulator for a couple months now and can comfortably hove tail-in.

In FMS, I only had to touch the collective now and then. But in real life, My heli was doing the "Yo-Yo". I simply could not keep it at one height. Other controls (cyclic, rudder) felt right, but not the collective.

What am I doing wrong? Or possibly, has my engine not been tuned right?

If you can hover in your first flight, you are damn good.

The "Yo-Yo" thing could be cause by wind, when there is wind the heli will lift and suddently the wind stop the heli will drop. So, you have to constantly feed and reduce the throttler depand on the environment.

You should be hover at 50% stick at 5.5 - 6 degree.

It helps to have the pitch rate a little "dead" in the hover range. This can be done by just not using the full pitch range or by having the "curve" a little "flat" in the hover range. What you are discribing is quite "normal"

Also check your links to ensure they are smooth and free, a few sticky links will make your collective and/or cyclic jump as the servo pushes and pushes and the links finally move...then it's back the other way... Chris

I experienced the same thing?

A couple of weeks ago I had my raptor 30 out for the first hovers. I had a couple of tanks through it. and was able to hover pretty good with a little yo-yo going on. However the next day was a little windy (small gusts now and then) The wind caused the yo-yo to be extreme. I would have it off the ground about a foot or so, then the wind would come and lift it off 8 - 10 feet up. Then it would come back down again and bounce on the rotopod. Then, it came down so hard I had a nasty boom strike!. So, over the past couple of weeks while putting it back together, I practiced on the sim with the wind turned up, and I got the same thing. I think I made a mistake when I started with the sim by keeping the wind at zero. You must control the collective much more when the wind is blowing, even a little bit!. gusty conditions make it worse. A steady wind is easier then gusty wind.

So, I don't think its the heli setup, practice on the sim with some wind.
Although, if you are going to make quick corrections with the collective, it is helpful that your engine is tuned and has quick response to throttle change.

I'm a begginer, so this doesn't come from much experience!
But I felt the EXACT same way you did!

your doing good

Shaw Goh,,, sound like you doing fine,,, I learned on the FMS too, I took off the training gear at half a tank, the throttle/collective is MUCH more sensitive on the real thing !! The wind will really push you up and down,,, it was really making me work this weekend !! From now on it will get easier and easier every time you fly ! Listen to these guys they know what they are talking about !

don't hate me for my opinion !
