Thanks to all of you I've managed reasonable (high altitude....)pirouetting flips, now I'm thinking of slamming into the ground with pirouetting rolls - where to start though.... I've seen CY on mpegs but can anyone say where to start?

Well on the sim of course. I just used my little model to see how it's supposed to look. Then practice practice practice on the sim. I do one pirouette per roll. So after the first half roll, the heli is facing backwards. Because of this, the aileron direction is opposite. That is, during a normal roll, you push to one side, hold it, and come back to center. For a single pirouette roll, you push to one side and then the other side and then back to center since the heli is facing the other direction. The trick is to time the aileron push correctly and to keep the rotor disk angle forward to maintain forward momentum. Combine this with the pirouette rate and collective management and you can see how this is a real tough true (Coleopter) 3D maneuver to perform smoothly!

If you've managed the piroflips then to do rolling ones you need to have some forward speed and then start piroueting. When the tail is perpendicular to the travel path start the piroflip by either forward or back elevator deppending on which way you like to flip and then continue with your piroflip as usual.

The flipping direction is determined by the first cyclic input you give your helicopter. If you want to do traveling pirotumbles then you need to start with the tail in the same line as the travel path and maintain the travel speed by managing the pitch so that there is a resultant forward motion similar to the way you manage it when doing simple traveling tumbles.

The speed of the forward travel shouldn't be too fast otherwise the tail will have to work work too hard and you might end up with an uneven piro rate.

When doing the piro rolls try to maintain a bit of a forward tilt when passing through the horizontal disc states so that you don't lose forward speed.
