Kyosho Caliber 30 & 60 - Concept - Nexus > What it the progression of the Concept line of heli's?

I bought a brand new Concept 30 SR-T that was and ARF but never flown. I've got 11/2 gal through it and it runs great. Still hovering with the hoop on it but I haven't tried nose in yet.

Can someone give me a brief chronological history on the Concept line? I'm hearing SX, EP, DR, SR....etc. From what I understand the SR-X was the most recent prior to the Nexus. I'm mainly concerned about the life span of all those plastic ball links and wondered if a metal swashplate was available. I may get a Caliber 30 after they become more popular and are proven out.

I'm a beginner and absolutely love flying this old girl. I'd like to upgrade to a 60 size some day after more time on the 30's.

Hi FS,

I started on a Concept too and still have one.

The lineage is;

DX, SE, SX, SR, SR-T, SR-X, (Nexus), VR, Caliber 30.

There is a metal swash available. Go with the Kyosho for about $40.
The Zeal will run you about $80 and isn't any better.

Another worthwhile upgrade is to convert all the plastic balls to metal.
As your SR-T didn't come with a auto-rotation clutch you may want to install one as well. Oh, the Zeal clutch and bell are good upgrades as well. Those and maybe a NHP torque tube will keep you flying until the next Millennium (which by the way, is an excellent 60 to move up to ;-)

Another good move, if you don't want to do the torque tube option that Blair mentioned, would be to install the 2mm tail drive wire and guides of the SR/SR-X. The Empire still has these parts. Another important longevity "upgrade" would be to replace the tail rotor bushings with bearings. The SR-T was designed to be a inexpensive trainer, and they cut a lot of corners on it. It comes with a 1.6mm tail drive wire and only two guides inside the boom. At least three are needed to stabilize the wire, regardless of size. You wouldn't think that .4mm makes that much of a difference, but it does. If you hear a rattling noise coming from inside the boom, those guides have wallowed out and are allowing the wire to "whip" around in there. Failure will follow shortly.

You will have to replace the coupler on the counter gear lay shaft as well as the input coupler at the tail box if you go to the 2mm wire. This is something to do during the next re-build, or if you hear that rattling noise.

These are great old ships. Blair is on the money regarding pedigree; I've had a half-dozen of these delightful machines and am in the process of restoring an SR. Call it nostalgia, second child-hood, whatever; I'm having a ball restoring this old junker and can't wait to fly it.

The Empire has most Concept 30 parts still in stock. They have everything you need to bring your SR-T up to SR standards. The SR and SX are my favorites of the breed. The SR-X was okay, but came with Z-bend pushrods and was produced in China. To me, anyway, there is a marked difference in quality between the kits made in Japan and the ones made in China.

Enjoy...

hey, these are great birds, don't let anyone knock them, I still have 2 a old DX converted to SRX and a SRX with hughes 500 fuse and most of the Zeal upgrades. both fly identical and will do just about it all. I love the helimax fan, and the metal mixing arms are a absolute must. along with the SRX pitch slider, don't bother flying it if it has the DX style pitch slider ( or some other upgraded slider) but I think you may have that. just take a look at it if it has no bearings and is held together by a clip toss it. if it is a screw together you are probably good. the dx style is very sloppy and will fly ok but not crisp. i also recomend the century ionized clutch bell, but the original isn't bad. I aggree to check you tail drive wire. you should have the upgraded but if not I would change it, if you like piro's like me it will not hold up to the stress, mine snapped 3 weeks ago. now it has the larger drive wire.

Thanks for the info.

Does Zeal have their own website?

What is a NHP torquetube?

I'm planning on adding two aluminum support tubes from the lower landing gear to near the rear of the tail for better boom support. I'm a bow hunter and a couple of old aluminum arrow shafts will work perfectly.

Unfortunatley I had to replace the rear tube once all ready. I did a nose bop on the grass and luckily my hoop took most of the load but my main rotors plowed a couple of small furrows in the grass and my tail had a small kink where it inserts into the frame. Still usable after straightening. I noticed that there were three guides in my boom and it has 2- 8x14mm bearings that slide over the tail input gear. Are these the bearings that you were talking about?

Steve C. You've mentioned a place called Empire. Where are they located and do they have a website?

Also, is it normal for Concepts to have what I think is a alot of flex in the main rotor grip? What I mean is that if I lift up on both main rotor blades they pivot about 5 degrees before they load against the rotor head. I've had the head apart and it looks fine. Just wondering but it seems sloppy.

I still have 6 Concept's. All are SX and SE versions. I love 'em...

As for upgrades, upgrade all the plastic balls. Very cheap to do and you will never have to worry about wearing out a plastic ball link. The only other MANDATORY upgrades are the clutch bearings and the pitch slider bearings (if you dont already have them).

As for the "Evil Empire" - that is another name for Great Planes (aka Towwer Hobbies).

FSFirst,

Yeah, I call Tower/Great Planes/et.al "The Evil Empire" because they are buying up every hobby-related business not nailed down, for reasons that are all too clear. Still, they have some good products at reasonable prices (for now, anyway), and are probably the best place to find Concept parts.

Don't worry about the flexing. The DDF head on the Concept is free-flapping; meaning that both blade grips can move independently of each other. This makes for a super-smooth hover and better tolerance for out-of-balance conditions, but comes at a price; this type of head is much more susceptible to boom strikes. No free lunch...
