I am curious how people travel with their heli's - by air that is. I remeber Erich and Remi had what looked like converted golf club hardcases at brooks a while back, etc. I presume we can do the checked-baggage thing (except fuel, what about batteries?).

Any links to 'purpose built' travel cases for heli's?

thanks,
george

Cases

Curtis Youngblood sells cases at his web site for shipping helis. I think his site is www.curtisyoungblood.com but if not a search should find it.

I once took my xcel onboard to puerto rico by air .. i really didn't have anything to carry the heli but this is what I did .. took it apart in main pieces head, tail, and rotorhead ..

found a tennis tote bag and the pod portion went in with the canopy attached .. the boom and blades sat in between the handles .. keep in mind I carried my heli onboard , one less thing to worry about and parked it in the upper cabinet . the radio gear, and equip was in a instrument aluminum box and was sent thru baggage. there are cases that will work when going by air ..

since no fuel was allowed I had to wait till I found a hobby shop in PR. the only fuel I found was the cheap green stuff .. eventually got everything working and went flying off the cliffs ..

I wonder if trying to carry a heli onboard a US air carrier would prove beneficial these days. For example, would they deem the rotor blades a weapon?...Who knows?

Here are some pictures of my Heli case. I got it from Curtis Youngblood enterprises.
The wood work is something you have to do yourself.
The case fits two .60 size helicopters.

travel

I've traveled a number of times with a heli in a regular suitcase. I remove the skids, T/B, head, and blades, and even a 60 size heli will easily fit in a regular suitcase that the airlines will recognize. I have a heli case, but it's so big it won't fit in a normal cars trunk, and is really a nuisance to carry. Reassembling the heli is easy and only takes about 20 minutes. Hope this helps. Steve.

hawk .. good point .. the inspectors were very curious about the radio gear, mainly the transmitter and questioned what all this stuff is .. I had to explain over and over .. they suspected it being contraband .. I had to keep saying "it's model airplane" even for a heli, duh!

being it's electronic gear they suspected it could be a terrorist device .. I would not want to ship the heli in baggage cause it can get lost or stolen real easy ..

better to ship it with fedex / Ups or other shipping carrier in advance and not with the general airlines ..

shipping

Ed;
If you're shipping to PR, the UPS rate is about $20.00 base + a dollar a pound, and the government adds on 6.6% tax for anything brought into the island. You're looking at about a $100 bill to get it there. You will also need someone to receive it once it gets there, not something that's likely to happen if you're on vacation or business. Finally, UPS will charge you extra for insurance. If you don't trust the airlines, you can buy additional baggage insurance when you check in. Steve.

Heli Case

Hi George,
Showcase Custom Cases
Fesslers Lane
Nashville TN (615) 256 9119
,They build to your spec, foam lined, felt lined, however thick you want it,
as well as case dimensions.
I usually measure the helicopter from front to rear for a inside lenghth,
total height plus 1 inch for a overall inside height dimension,
the width of the skids plus an inch for inside width,
David Threet (the boss) usually does the rest
It comes in choice of colors, choice of wall thickness(I go 1/4 inch),
you can add handles anywhere on it plus add half recessed wheels to carry it like a suitcase w a handle, you come up w it, he'll build it.
I think I paid @ 400 for it a couple years ago,its got roughly 160,000 miles on it and a bunch of fuel spilled on it,still looks like the photo, works great as a table, can seat 2 people, weighs about 25 lbs empty.
Ill get the model #(everycase gets a serial number so if you want another you just give him the # and he has the specs on file.Best thing about it is no heli dissassembly required
Really nice folks to deal with
