It was real interesting to see the ION close up a Charmouth here in the UK this past weekend.
I’m very keen on getting one, and one of my reasons was that it’s a quiet electric model, but maybe not.

It’s surprising just how noisy that thing is. Sure, it’s quieter than a glow model, but still really noisy compared to some of the smaller electric models like the Logo10 or Logo20.

Our club has 2 days a week that’s electric only, and this was my main reason for wanting one, but now I’m interested if noise is an issue with any of the larger electric models, and it might be worth rethinking exactly why you want an electric.

At the end of the day, it’s a cool model to have, I was well impressed.

As they get bigger the "vortex" from the blades becomes a real noise maker.

the larger the model, the more blade slap your going to hear. blade slap is the noise of one blades going thru the vortex of the other and creates that cool fluttery sound when doing 3d and auto esecially. thats kinda what make the ion so cool is you can hear it better, the glow motors kinda shadow the cool noises

I thought that was called "blade farting?"

Anyway, does the motor have a nice sound? That Graupner 60 sized electric Jet Ranger has a nice turbine sound which adds to the whole scale experience. You can do a search for "electric jet ranger" and listen to it.

I'm not really an R/C pilot, I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night!

lol,

Its funny how people or so into the sound their heli makes regardless of the fact that its already quiet. I know I am.

They should make electric helis using beltdrives. Then all you hear is that nice blade flatulant sound.

I dont think the noise should really be a problem with the Ion. The heli does scream though because the gear system is running at such high rpm. However, I dont think i should be a problem. Its the glow helis with that engine sound that annoys people the most.

I put the Db metre on a friends Ion. this was just a rough metre but it is very close to the ys 91 on a sb16. My bet is when I put the metre on the tripod and pull out the tape it will be about 1 to 2 Db lower then the nitro setup. I will post next time I have the chance at the field.
Most of the noise is not from the blades. it is the gear train. my guess is as the gear train breaks in the Db's will drop by at least 1 Db.

ESC contribution to the noise?

Is it possible that the ESC makes the motor noisy? I think it is reasonable to make this assumption since almost all of the R/C ESCs for BLDCs does not impose current control but only voltage control. It is already loud to run the motor even if it is not mounted on the gear chain. Maybe someone can tell us what ESC is quieter than others.

I would imagine the ESC itself is virtually silent. The voltage/current waveforms it produces can make the motor sing, but again, compared to gear whine and the main and tail rotor noise, I would think this is pretty insignificant.
