I know no one watches this forum, but I have just had a major milestone and need to vent.

I LOOPED MY OLD SCHLUTER WHOPPER, TWICE!!

I have had this machine for 2 years. It has proven to be a large challenge. Many broken tail feathers later I think I am finally getting the hang of it. I still can not make a take off with out standing on a string to spool up the rotor, but a real takeoff is on the list of things for this summer.

With 4 flyable whoppers, I hope to become the World Whopper expert!

hi,

I have two of them, both in perfect shape, one nearly ready to take off (just took the receiver for another ship).
I tried to get one in the air last season... with no luck. :-(

Very difficult to get sufficient RPM (holding it on a fixed spot with a rope attached to the tail wheel), and quite impossible to keep them (or get some more) during the accelaration. Nearly smashed it twice on the ground because of a "rolling takeoff".

I decided to keep them for static display only, cause it's quite difficult to get spare parts now.

Bigben.

Chad,
Congrats.
Of course you had to wait until I left the field so I missed it.
Let me know when you are going the next time and I will record the flight.

The best way I have found to do takeoffs is like you said.
Tie a string to the tailwheel.
stand on the string.
Spin up the rotors,
unhook the rotors from the engine,
pull the throttle back to 1/2 power,
take your foot off the string,
smoothly advence the throttle to full power.
Keep some back elevator in during the takeoff roll.

Make sure your tailwheel is straight when you let go of the string.

Norm!! I did not know you watched this site!
I will let get in touch when I am going out to the field.

Chad.

Thanks for those infos... Maybe I'll try again... one day.

First, I'd like to finish my giant Scale Kellett (Autogyro Company of Arizona), then maybe... ;-))

Chad,

just some questions: what kind of blades do you have ?
I have 2 kinds of blades:
- the first ones have a wide cord and a "S" profile
- the second ones are "thiner" and longer, Clark-X or Clark-Y
The second ones were sold as "optionnal blades" and are supposed to fly better, so I didn't try the first ones.

What is exactly the pitch angle of your blades ?

Thx in advance.

The Whopper is an old Robbie Schluter kit put out in the mid 80's. It uses a helicopter head and has an auto spool up system. Heavy, a challenge to fly, but different! If you do a search on the web, you will find some pictuers. I don't have a way to put them up yet.

I finally did it!

The Whopper did it's first rolling take off the other day! Usually I stand on a string untill the rotor is up to speed (it has an auto spool up system), disenguage the rotor, and let it go. I finally stood back, opened the throttle until it started to move, disenguaged the rotor and rolled to a beautifull takeoff!!!

After many slow passes and a few loops, she landed softly. What a great way to end a great flight!

Whoppers are cool!

I do!! Will you be around thursday? I think I might have some of the day off and will be going by your house around 10:30 am.

If all goes well, you will see many loops and rolling takeoffs this summer.

Was that you that flew over the field sunday?

My wife (Diane) will be there and I will have the tape ready.

I didn't get to fly Sunday but I was at the flight park most of the day.

Have you contacted Marty from the flight park?
I mentioned to him you might be contacting him.

Have not got a hold of Marty yet. It has been a busy summer. This week will be a short one. Only 60 hours or so of work this week. I really want to do it, but I have not been able to devote the time

If you want let me know when you have some time (providing the weather is decent) and I can meet you there and introduce you.

Let me know when you plan on going to the field. I want to see (and tape) you looping the whopper. If we can get it on tape we might be able to convert it to digital so we could post it here. Worst case I could record the loop with my digital camera (no sound and so so quality) so others could see it.

Sounds good! I will call you and send a notice on ARCH. Is your Xerox email the one to send a notice to?
