Hi,

I want to start an open source project for flight logging. It's going to be web based using php and mysql. Anybody interested in planning/implementing this, please PM me, I may need some additional help in the future.

I'm currently figuring out what type of information is useful and how it should be organized. I came across the flightlogger here before and thought that it was waaaaay too complicated. I want to include all that information, but make it optional.

How would you like a flight logger to work?

Please PM or post requests in this thread.

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for the PM's so far! They have helped a lot!

So this is what I'm looking to do so far.

Fleet management
--Inputting Equipment
----Input all helicopter kits
----Input all engines
----Input all Rx's
----Input all gyros
----Input all servos
----Input all accessories
----Input all batteries

--Managing Equipment
----Build Heli
------Select Kit to work with
------Select battery
------Select Engine
------Select Rx
------Select gyro
------Select each servo
------Select accessories

Flight Log
--Pick Helicopter (after building)
----Add flight date
----List tank consumption
----Report problem - assign maintenance
----Notes

Maintenance
--Assign maintenance schedule
----Input maintenance schedule
------Heli kit inspection period
------Engine inspection period
------Battery test period

If you modify your helicopter. You would just edit it and then log flights. This way a count of how many flights could be tracked per individual item. This way the heli is not grouped as a whole and batteries and engines are left just to guessing.

All this information should be able to be downloaded as an XML (RCHML) file for you to backup.

This project should be on sourceforge.net soon. Looking for developers.

I've been using a simple flight log I put together for Aceess for several years now, it has all the basics I feel I need, though it could always be improved. It is avalible for download from my home page. Quite a few people have been using it, I am told.

Is your goal just to keep track of the flight time of each helicopter or are you looking at tracking the flight time on all the components such as servos, gyros, batteries and other equipment associated with a given helicopter?

If so, I would guess that you would have to label each individual component and enable a system for installation and removal of the components from individual helicopters. thereby enabling a system to track the total flight time of each individual component as it is moved from one helicopter to another.

It would be really nice to know how old each component was and how many flying hours each component had accumulated. Batteries would be of special interest.

Sounds like a nice project.

I have made a few Microsoft Access databases and have an interest in this project.

P.S. I am "not a programmer or developer" but an amateur interested in watching this project grow.

Yes HelicopterJohn,

I am planning on making it so you create a cyber helicopter fleet that you basically build each helicopter. When you change a part for real, you change the part in the program. My initial intention was that when you fly, flight time is logged per part, not on the entire helicopter. I think that some people may not like all the configuration, so it may have an option for simple or advanced mode.

As far as access goes, I'll probably actually build my mock database in access, just because it's so easy and quick to do/modify. Then the next step will be converting that to mysql. I will probably need some help minimizing overhead in that database (hint, hint, mysql gurus)

Like I said, this is an open source project, the source and associated files will be posted, so it's going to be free to use, develop, mod, and whatever else you can think of. This is anybody's and everybody's project so all input is welcome. I'm just the navigator.

Preliminary Database Relationship Table of User Inventory

I'm still working on the cyberheli, flight log, and part specifications portion.

Parts are categorized and will contain everything but the helicopter kits. Helicopter kits have their own table. All parts and kits will be placed into user inventory. This inventory is what will be used to build your cyberheli.

More to come!

I've opened a forum that will show updates and progress on this project.

www.raptorheli.com/forum

Technical and specific information will be posted in the flight logger forum. You guys will still get general information and notices of releases.
