Event Details: Saturday and Sunday were perfect days for flying and the pilots had a great time. The food and drink was GREAT and was supplied at no-charge thanks to our most gracious host Bob Pinto. We had pilots that came to the Gathering # 2 from all over the country. We had open flying all day Saturday and Sunday with a few Demonstation flights by the Szabo Boys and others. They even had a demonstration flight of a turbine R/C scale helicopter. Bob was very fortunate in that he had extremely good support from premiere vendors that donated items for the event contestants. Hopefully more vendors will step forward and donate to this worthy event for the Gathering # 3. Additionally, Bob Pinto donated a Raptor 50 with a Futaba 9C radio system for the Grand Prize. Bob also had a hospitality suite in Atlantic City for all the contestants. Thanks to everyone that attended. The Atlantic County Skyblazers really enjoyed having you attend their Event. They and Bob hope to see you next year.

Raptor 30/50 Custom Gear Hub

Red and Gray gears with countersunk screws installed. Also, Gear Hub with stabiizer screws.

Gear Hub assembly installed on main shaft.

This is the hub I made to replace the OEM white gear that is shipped with the Raptor 30/50 V2 helicopters. Unlike the OEM gear this unit has "No Drag" and rotates freely. The red gear utilized is from the Raptor 30/50 V1 kit. The countersunk screws are 3mm X .5 and 10mm in length which are cut to fit. The same screws are used in both the red and gray gears. The stabilizer screws are 3mm X .5 socket head cap screws cut to length.

Swashplate Leveling Tool Setup Instructions

Dimensions

Leveling tool in place along with paddle alignment gauges.

Step 1:
With the "RADIO OFF" just place the Swashplate Leveling Tool between the top of the mainshaft collar and the bottom of the swashplate. Push down on the swashplate and it will automatically level the swashplate. Then check the paddles with appropriate paddle alignment gauge to ensure that the swashplate and the paddles are in proper alignment.

Step 2:
REMOVE the Swashplate Leveling Tool and turn on the radio and advance the collective to the full open position to allow the Swashplate Leveling Tool to be inserted between the mainshaft collar and the bottom of the swashplate. Remove the links to both the for and aft and the right and left cyclic controls. SLOWLY move the collective downward until the bottom of the swashplate just touches the Swashplate Leveling Tool (without binding). Make sure all the trims are neutral on both the for and aft and right and left cyclic controls. Next adjust all the removed links so that the Swashplate Leveling Tool and the swashplate are properly aligned. Reconnect all the links and make sure the alignment is still square with the Swashplate Alignment Tool. P.S. Make sure that the trims are set to neutral in all flight modes. Your swashplate and flybar paddles are now properly aligned.

Step 3:
REMOVE the swashplate leveling tool prior to flight.

Raptor 50 Custom Tail Drive Speed up Gear
Raptor 50 (8 Tooth Rear Timing Belt Pulley) to replace the OEM 9 tooth pulley. The 8 tooth timing gear stock is available from SDP. You can drill the center to 5mm, machine the ends to accept tail belt guides, cross-drill the timing gear stock on one end to key to the tail rotor shaft and machine away the gear portion of the pinned end and enlarge OEM ID to fit new pulley. Use the OEM tail belt guide on the end opposite the pinned end. Here are a few pictures to show what I am talking about.

Part # 6A 2M08XL15 5.08mm Pitch, 8 Teeth, 200mm Long, Aluminum Pulley Stock Price $17.21 Plus shipping and handling. Please verify this item for suitability prior to ordering. I originally got this information from John Benario. Phone # 1.800.819.8900 Just finished today. Will try it out on my next tear down. Something you might wany to consider. Enjoy!

DISCLAIMER: I can't attest to its suitability for use on the Raptor series of helicopters. Anyone considering making one of these units should carefully evaluate any and all safety and engineering concerns prior to its use. I assume no responsibility/liability as it pertains to its suitability for use. Considerations I thank everyone for their interest in this post. As I originally stated, I bought the stock for the project some time back and have just found the time to do the machine work. Considerations prior to use: 1. 06-26-04 I have run this unit for about 3 months and everything is working fine. One other individual here on RR has made some of these hubs and has experienced problems with the tail belt shredding after about 5 gallons of use. I personally have not encountered this issue and have about 8 gallons on the unit I am currently running on my machine.. Anyone considering this modification should run the tail belt tight and monitor the tail belt for shredding. 2. The hope is that with the extra RPM that tail rotor control will improve. I am currently running NHP 85 tail blades. 3. The "possible danger" is that with the extra RPM's the tail rotor hub may not be able to stand the extra load which could result in the loss of a tail rotor blade which could result in damage to the helicopter or personal injury.

I personally would not use the PV0031 tail hub listed below as it has a very limited grip range for the screws utilized for the tail blade holders.
PV0031 V1 tail rotor hub (don't use this one)

The V2 unit PV0151 listed below has a better grip range for the screws utilized for the blade holders and "may" be better suited for this extra RPM generated by this unit.

PV0151 V2 tail rotor hub

Tail Rotor Speed Comparison

1800 Headspeed X 4.30 = 7740 (TR) RPM (Excel)
1800 Headspeed X 4.66 = 8388 (TR) RPM (Tempest)
1800 Headspeed X 4.55 = 8190 (TR) RPM (OEM R50) 9 tooth pulley
1800 Headspeed X 5.12 = 9216 (TR) RPM (Mod R50) 8 tooth pulley
1850 Headspeed X 5.12 = 9472 (TR) RPM (Mod R50) 8 tooth pulley
1900 Headspeed X 5.12 = 9728 (TR) RPM (Mod R50) 8 tooth pulley
1950 Headspeed X 5.12 = 9984 (TR) RPM (Mod R50) 8 tooth pulley
2000 Headspeed X 5.12 = 10240 (TR) RPM (Mod R50) 8 tooth pulley
I am not sure on the Raptor 60 but the back of the manual says Gear Ratio 1:9.3 : 4.65 Whatever that means????
If the tail rotor gear ratio were 4.65 then tail rotor speed would be as follows: 1800 Headspeed X 4.65 = 8370 (TR) RPM (Raptor 60)

Important Safety Note: As you can see the Tail Rotor RPM's at 2000 headspeed are 10240 which is 1140 RPM over the OEM RPM of 9100.

Throttle Jockey Pro Setup For Futaba 9ZWCII

My goal was to set up the Throttle Jockey Pro using the three position flight condition switch (E) utilizing a different RPM for each flight condition. I used AUX 2 and with the ATV’s and AFR’s at +-100, I then calibrated the Throttle Jockey Pro. Then I went back to the AFR for AUX 2 with the switch position on switch (E) to Normal flight mode and changed the AFR setting to A24 /B24 which gave me an RPM setting of 1650. Then I set the AFR for AUX 2 with the switch position on switch (E) to Idle Up1 flight mode and changed the AFR setting to A31/B31 which gave me an RPM setting of 1850. Then I set the AFR for AUX 2 with the switch position on switch (E) to Idle Up2 flight mode and changed the AFR setting to A37/B37 which gave me an RPM setting of 1950. This setup was accomplished with a 9ZWCII Futaba Transmitter with a R149DP Receiver. It has been flight tested and works PERFECT.

Thanks to Scott Kantrowitz for installing these safety devices at our local club. The 8 ft. telescoping pole is made by Mr. Long Arm as is the adjustable sanding bracket. The sun (Blocker) shade itself is made of Coreplast and is 12 1/2 inches in diameter. The Coreplast material used on the sun (Blocker) shade shown was recycled from an old sign. The color of the Coreplast is unimportant, but white seems to be the best. The adjustable painting pad (now mounting bracket) is mounted to the Coreplast with 1/4 inch nylon bolts and nuts. You will have to grind off the two black plastic rivets that held the painting pad onto the bracket. Utilize these holes for mounting the bracket to the Coreplast with 1/4" X 20 Nylon nuts and bolts. I believe these items are available at Lowes. You can easily make a portable mounting bracket from PVC pipe or dig some holes in the ground at your flying site and insert some PVC pipe of the appropriate size that will allow the telescoping post to fit in. The idea behind this device is to shield you eyes from the glare that is generated by the sun. You will have great vision except on one "little" spot in your total viewing area. You have got to try one of these if you are at a flying site that faces the sun. Remember your can adjust for the individual pilots height and the sun angle. Nice project for one of those cold winter days up North.

APPROXIMATE COST: No. 9248 LongArm Telescoping 8 ft handle $11.00 No. 0470 LongArm paint pad $3.00 2 ea. 1/4 x 20 Nylon nuts and bolts $1.00 12 1/2" piece of Coreplast find some scrap or purchase at sign shop. 1 " schedule 40 PVC pipe to make a portable mounting bracket or install pieces into the ground at the pilot area. Most of these items were available at Lowes. The total cost for this project is approximately $25.00.

Bottom Line: With this device you can fly in a sky that has the sun shining in your eyes and completely take the sun out of the picture except for one "little dot" in the horizon. Just align the round Coreplast disk so that the sun is blocked from your view and stand still while flying. The result is that you get a view that is just like one where the sun is not present.
